My approach

Hello and welcome.

My name is Charlotte Vaughan and I offer both an integrative psychotherapy service and an ADHD Assessment and Diagnosis service,  online and in person in Haslemere and Farnham, Surrey. I have worked in the field of mental health for twenty years, and as a qualified Counselling Psychologist since 2019.

Psychotherapy:
I have particular expertise in helping people with anxiety, depression, relationship problems, fertility and IVF journeys and difficulties with work and study. I am particularly interested in helping people with low self esteem who have suffered/are suffering from narcissistic abuse within their family/intimate relationships.

My training has equipped me with skills and expertise in cognitive behavioural therapy (understanding the link between your thoughts, feelings and behaviours) and psychodynamic therapy (working with the past and unconscious processes affecting your present life).

My approach is underpinned by a humanistic philosophy - I strongly believe in the potential for change and growth, and take into account your unique story and experience, embracing difference and diversity.

Therapy is the opportunity for you to explore your difficulties as well as your hopes for the future in a safe and confidential space. It is a chance for you to reflect on your life and your experiences, to gain insights and make changes. I work without judgement, taking a warm and empathic stance towards you and your experiences. I use the therapeutic relationship as a vehicle to help us make sense of your ways of relating with others.

ADHD Assessment and Diagnosis:

I worked for 12 years at University College London as a mental health and study mentor for students experiencing a range of mental health issues as well as SpLD and neurodevelopmental disorders such as dyslexia, autism and ADHD. This experience led to my passion and interest for supporting adults with ADHD, and it felt like a natural progression to begin offering ADHD assessment and diagnosis as part of my clinical practice. I have completed training with UKAAN (UK Adult ADHD Network) on ADHD Assessment and Diagnosis and undertake supervision with a Consultant Psychiatrist specialising in ADHD.

I follow NICE guidelines and the DSM-V Criteria throughout the assessment, utilising NICE approved diagnostic tools. This can ensure a rigorous and ethical assessment process. As a psychologist undertaking the assessment I can offer a uniquely compassionate and therapeutic experience, so while there are of course checklists to be completed you will also have the space to reflect on your symptoms and experiences and to make sense of the ways in which the ADHD has both impaired and added to your life and your identity.

If at the end of the assessment process you receive a diagnosis of ADHD and wish to explore medication options you will be referred to a Consultant Psychiatrist who will be able to conduct a medication consultation and prescribe on the basis of my report. If you wish to set up a shared care agreement with your GP under the NHS right to choose scheme regarding continued prescribing this can be discussed with the Psychiatrist. If you wish to undertake ADHD coaching I can refer you onwards to experienced practitioners.
